I Contend with Zhu Di for the World is a complete English Zhu Gaoxu alternate history novel set at the moment when the early Ming dynasty is about to fracture. In 1399, during the first year of the Jianwen reign, a modern man finds himself living as the seventeen- or eighteen-year-old Zhu Gaoxu: the second son of the Prince of Yan, Zhu Di.

The story opens near the Qinhuai River in the imperial capital. Zhu Gaoxu and his brothers are under close court supervision while the Jianwen Emperor strips power from the imperial princes. Zhu Gaoxu knows that Zhu Di will soon launch the Jingnan Campaign from Beiping. Knowing what is coming, Zhu Gaoxu must preserve the public mask of a reckless young prince, escape the capital’s watch, and reach his father’s territory before the conflict begins.
Zhu Gaoxu brings modern historical knowledge, but no game system or supernatural cultivation. Survival depends on reading people, organizing soldiers, building alliances, and deciding when changing a known event is worth the risk. Once his choices alter the course of the war, he cannot rely on memory alone.
The Jingnan Campaign provides the first great test. Zhu Gaoxu fights beside Zhu Di as a commander and son, while the struggle around Zhu Yunwen draws in princes, generals, officials, and local powers. Battles matter, but so do logistics, firearms, recruitment, intelligence, and the political stories used to justify rebellion. The Ming dynasty succession struggle grows from a fight for survival into a debate over who should rule and how the empire should be governed.
Beyond the battlefield, the story follows military administration, naval power, state institutions, industrial development, and technological change. Later arcs broaden the conflict well beyond the opening campaign. Campaign strategy sits alongside the practical work of governing.
Zhu Di is not a distant historical opponent: he is Zhu Gaoxu’s father in this life. Their early alliance carries suspicion from the beginning, and success creates new questions about succession, loyalty, and power. The rivalry between Zhu Gaoxu and Zhu Di develops through political maneuvering and open conflict without reducing either man to a simple obstacle.
Download the first five chapters free in TXT format. The sample is taken directly from the complete TXT edition and introduces Zhu Gaoxu’s reputation, his position in the capital, and his plan to return to Beiping.
